Room at Kania Lodge

Kania Lodge near Gdańsk in Poland is a world-class small boutique lodge with outstanding facilities for a romantic weekend, family break or company retreat.

Set in landscaped gardens and a vineyard in beautiful, unspoilt countryside with lake and forest views, it is less than an hour’s drive from the Tri-City of Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia and just 20 km from Gdańsk airport.

Its 15 stylish rooms including two bedroom family suites as well as a secluded luxury private cottage are all individually designed and furnished to high standards. Some have private terraces, others wood-burning stoves in addition to the standard central heating. All have lake views.

Amenities include tennis court, private jetty and beach, boats, bicycles, spa room, conference room and broadband internet connection throughout.

The lodge’s highly praised kitchen serves imaginatively prepared dishes from fresh and wherever possible local ingredients – like our signature lamb dishes from sheep reared on our own farm.

We also have our own vineyard and a tasting room with a fireplace. The lodge’s wine list has more than 250 wines from a dozen different countries with vintages going back two decades. For five consecutive years the world’s largest wine magazine Wine Spectator has honoured our list with an Award of Excellence and described our selection as “one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world”. The New York-based Wine Spectator has 2.5-million readers worldwide.

We also produce our own export-quality vodka from potatoes grown on and around the estate. Our international brand, Vestal Vodka, is well known in the UK and France (www.vestalvodka.com) and we also produce a special “Kania” vodka which captures the spirit of Kaszubia and is a popular memento with guests.

If you want to know more about this, the story of Vestal Vodka, Kania Lodge and Wine Express, our other company, is told in the book ‘The White Lake’ by owner John Borrell. Published in London in 2014, The White Lake has won plaudits from leading writers, journalists and critics in the US, Britain, New Zealand and Poland. It can be purchased through Amazon or through the lodge itself.

The quality of the lodge’s accommodation, food and wine is matched by the warmth of the welcome you receive and the outstandingly friendly, courteous and efficient service from our staff, almost all of whom have been at the lodge for a decade or more.

In addition to the facilities offered at the lodge itself, there are many nearby attractions. It is possible to cycle or walk for hours along forest trails without being disturbed by cars and with occasional glimpses of deer, foxes, hares and the rare red kite, Kania in Polish, after which the lodge is named. There are horse riding facilities too within 15 minutes of the lodge.

For golfers there are three courses within 40 minutes of the lodge, one just 20 minutes away, and plenty to do for those looking to explore the area. The old city of Gdańsk is 45 minutes away while both the Baltic Coast and Teutonic brick castle at Malbork, the largest brick castle in all of Europe, are just over an hour’s drive.

There can be few better places in Poland – or indeed Europe – for a small top level conference and companies from as far away as the United States have chosen us for their meetings. We can meet guests at the airport or train station and arrange other tours and meetings both on and off site.

The lodge’s fully equipped conference room seats up to 30 and has broadband internet connection. There are special prices for one-day off site meetings which include the conference room and equipment, refreshments and lunch in the lodge’s dining room.

For conference groups wishing to stay overnight the lodge offers special rates for its luxury rooms. Wine tastings are complimentary for groups and we can also arrange many other on-site activities ranging from outdoor team-building exercises during the day to professional dance tuition in the evenings.

Kania Lodge makes the Andrew Harper 500 Favorite Hotels in the World list

For 32 years Andrew Harper has travelled the world in search of hotels and resorts of individuality and distinction and currently recommends fewer than 1,000 properties worldwide. In his opinion they represent the best of the best. Although he reviews larger hotels his preference has always been for more intimate places which offer a high level of personal service.

“I always travel anonymously and pay the full rate for lodgings,” he says. This enables me to give impatrial advice to my demanding readers. My audience is composed of affluent and sophisticated travellers with the inclination and financial mans to follow in my footsteps."

Here’s his review of Kania Lodge in Andrew Harper’s Hideaway Report

“Before returning to Warsaw, we made a foray into the Polish countryside to visit Malbork Castle and afterwards spent a night at KANIA LODGE, a delightful contemporary country house hotel 20 miles west of Gdansk. Run by New Zealander John Borrell and his Polish wife, Anna, it is located on the shores of the clean and pretty Jezioro Biale (White Lake) in the rural Kaszuby region.

The lodge has won an Award of Excellence for two years running from Wine Spectator and is justly renown for the excellence of its restaurant.

Having settled into our comfortable and pleasing decorated room, which came with oak floors, peach coloured walls, contemporary paintings and a woodburning cast-iron stove, we enjoyed an afternoon of cycling through the surrounding woods. On our return we idled in the sauna and Jacuzzi prior to a splendid dinner of wild salmon, duck and local mushrooms. The creature comforts at Kania Lodge are first rate and the setting is blissfully tranquil but what really makes this place special is the hospitality of Borrell and his wife."

90 points – A fine hotel of considerable charm.
